Tenugui towel tsukimi
Tenugui is a traditional Japanese cotton towel / cloth. It usually measures approximately 35 x 90 cm and is made of smooth, thin cotton with raw, unhemmed shorter edges. Tenugui has many uses - it can be a cloth, a hand or face towel, or a headband (protecting against sweat during training or physical work). In the past, it was an indispensable attribute of craftsmen and warriors, and today tenugui still has a practical use, but not only that. It is also a cultural and decorative element - tenugui often have interesting designs, which is why they may be hanged on the wall like a picture, can be used as elegant gift wrapping or an original souvenir.
The image on the cloth shows tsukimi - moon viewing. The Japanese believe that the spots visible on the full moon resemble a rabbit beating mochi rice balls - therefore, the full moon and moon rabbits are a traditional motif for autumn days. The design on the cloth presents tsukimi – moon viewing.
