Tsurushibina tenugui towel

Tenugui is a traditional Japanese cotton towel / cloth. It usually measures approximately 35 x 90 cm and is made of smooth, thin cotton with raw, unhemmed shorter edges. Tenugui has many uses - it can be a cloth, a hand or face towel, or a headband (protecting against sweat during training or physical work). In the past, it was an indispensable attribute of craftsmen and warriors, and today tenugui still has a practical use, but not only that. It is also a cultural and decorative element - tenugui often have interesting designs, which is why they may be hanged on the wall like a picture, can be used as elegant gift wrapping or an original souvenir.

The image on the cloth features a trurushibina decoration – a traditional Japanese decoration prepared for Girls' Day (Hinamatsuri), celebrated on 3 March. Instead of the classic hina dolls placed on shelves, tsurushibina are hanging decorations made of fabric and suspended on strings under a small canopy or hoop. The tsurushibina decoration consists of small, hand-sewn figures – usually animals, flowers, symbols of happiness – and is supposed to bring happiness, health and prosperity.
