Tenugui towel kadomatsu
Tenugui is a traditional Japanese cotton towel / cloth. It usually measures approximately 35 x 90 cm and is made of smooth, thin cotton with raw, unhemmed shorter edges. Tenugui has many uses - it can be a cloth, a hand or face towel, or a headband (protecting against sweat during training or physical work). In the past, it was an indispensable attribute of craftsmen and warriors, and today tenugui still has a practical use, but not only that. It is also a cultural and decorative element - tenugui often have interesting designs, which is why they may be hanged on the wall like a picture, can be used as elegant gift wrapping or an original souvenir.
The image on the cloth illustrates kadomatsu, a Japanese New Year decoration placed at the entrances to homes and buildings from late December to the first few days of January. It consists mainly of bamboo, pine and plum branches, which symbolize strength, longevity, and hope. The tenugui towel also features maneki neko - a cat that invites happiness and good fortune into the home with its raised paw.
