An original Japanese ceramic mug in muted shades of grey and brown. Decorated with a design featuring a pair of owls and the inscription ‘I am happy because I am with you’. It would make a nice gift for a loved one.

In Japanese, an owl is called ‘fukurou’, and ‘fuku’ means happiness, which is why the owl is also a symbol of happiness. Another spelling of ‘fukurou’ means ‘no effort, no trouble and no difficulties’, i.e. happiness in the sense of good, favourable fortune. A play on words involving the character ‘fuku’ (happiness) is ‘fukuro’, meaning ‘happy path’, which the Japanese also interpret as a safe journey or good fortune on life’s path. That is why owls are a common decorative motif – items decorated with their image are given as gifts to express wishes for happiness and good fortune.
