An original matcha tea bowl, handcrafted and decorated at the Shunzangama studio in Kyoto. The Shunzangama studio is run by Mori Shunzan, a third-generation ceramic artist. He continues the tradition of one of Japan’s most esteemed artists, Kenzan Ogata. This exceptionally talented painter and ceramist lived and worked in the Kyoto area at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. He was also a master of the tea ceremony, which is why his works are usually tea vessels – bowls, teapots, etc. Kenzan Ogata’s distinctive style is often referred to as kenzan-yaki and is recognised as a distinct style of pottery within the kyoyaki (kiyomizuyaki) tradition (pottery characteristic of the Kyoto region).

The bowl is made of brick-red clay and covered with a creamy, matt glaze. The artist has artfully decorated it with drawings of branches sprinkled with cherry blossoms in pastel shades of white and pink, complemented by golden accents. It is ideal as a traditional bowl for preparing matcha tea. A unique piece of contemporary applied art.
