Seigan Yamane
Seigan Yamane is a respected ceramic artist who lives and works in Hagi. Many years of trials and experience with traditional materials and techniques are apparent in the artist's unique vessels.
His works usually have irregular, organic shapes and are made of fairly dense, often porous clay with small pebbles. They embody the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi. The artist is famous for experimenting with blue glaze, which has already earned the name “Seigan blue.” Master Seigan believes that there is some undiscovered mystery in ceramic vessels, and the navy blue color evokes the image of an infinite universe. Seigan blue is the color of the sky and the sea, a blend of endless possibilities of blue, navy blue, and other color nuances.
Seigan is a very creative artist, he makes both tea ceramics - tea cups and teapots, but also beautiful bowls, plates and vases. The classic glazes that Master Seigan regularly uses, apart from “Seigan blue”, also include the so-called sansai - a mixture of green, white, pink, and brown, kairagi - a thick milky white glaze, irregularly distributed on the vessel, creating a unique, multidimensional texture, and “peacock's eye” - kujaku.
The artist finds great joy in his daily work and wants to share it with everyone who uses his vessels :)
Seigan Yamane is our favorite ceramic artist and a very cheerful, energetic person. In the past, he was a karate instructor, and today, despite his mature age, he is very active in his career and in his life. Mr. Yamane's works have been available at Nagomi for many years, and you can see recaps of our meetings at his studio on our social media profiles. Every time we visit his studio, it is difficult for us to choose which items we want to present to you at Nagomi because the diversity of forms, colors, and glazes delights us so much that we spend many hours shopping and still feel hungry for more :)
